Manchester City may lose midfielder Rodri for the rest of the season after he got injured during a 2-2 draw with Arsenal. Rodri, from Spain, hurt his knee and might have torn a ligament. If this is confirmed, he will miss the rest of the games this season.
In an ironic twist this comes just one week after the Spanish international threatened to go on strike.
Rodri is very important to Manchester City. Without him, the team may not play as well. Last season, City lost only one game with Rodri. When he didn’t play, the team lost three games in the Premier League.
City's rivals like Arsenal and Liverpool could have a better chance to win the title if Rodri is out for a long time. City only won the league by two points last season, so missing Rodri might be a big problem for them.
Coach Pep Guardiola will need to find someone to take Rodri’s place. During the Arsenal game, he replaced Rodri with Mateo Kovacic. Kovacic is a good player, but he might not be as strong as Rodri in the midfield. Other players like John Stones or Rico Lewis could also help fill in, but they are not used to playing in that position.
Guardiola might need to change the way the team plays to adjust for Rodri’s absence. Normally, City plays with one midfielder holding the defense, but now they might need to use two players in that role. However, this could mean fewer attacking options and less width in their play.
Rodri’s injury is a big blow to City’s chances of winning the Premier League this season.
