Spain Silence France — Yamal's Birthday
The first semi-final on 14 July was between two of the world's best teams: Spain and France. Both teams had been impressive throughout the tournament. France were led by Kylian Mbappé, who had scored six goals before the match. Spain had the teenager Lamine Yamal, who had already dazzled the world with his skill and confidence.
The match took place on a very special day for Yamal — his 19th birthday. In the 22nd minute, Yamal ran at the French defence and was fouled inside the penalty area. The referee pointed to the spot. Mikel
Oyarzabal stepped up and scored from the penalty kick to give Spain a 1-0 lead.
Then, in the 58th minute, right-back Pedro Porro scored Spain's second goal. It was a composed finish after a clever one-two with Dani Olmo. Spain were 2-0 up and in complete control. Yamal almost scored himself soon after, but the goal was ruled out for offside by the width of a few centimetres.
Mbappé, France's great star, had almost no chances all evening. He did not have a single shot on target. Spain's defenders were outstanding — organised, disciplined, and calm. The final score was Spain 2, France 0. It was Spain's sixth clean sheet in seven matches at the tournament — a new World Cup record.
Spain are back in the World Cup final for the first time since they won the title in 2010. Their coach Luis de la Fuente said afterwards: "We were up against one of the best teams in the world. But today, they were facing the best team in the world."
Â
Yamal vs Mbappé — the Battle of the Generations
One of the most talked-about stories of the semi-final was the contest between two extraordinary players: 19-year-old Lamine Yamal of Spain, and 27-year-old Kylian Mbappé of France.
Mbappé entered the match as one of the favourites to win the Golden Boot — the prize for the tournament's top scorer. He had scored six goals in the tournament already. But against Spain, he was quiet, frustrated, and rarely dangerous. Spain's defenders, especially Marc Cucurella, dealt with him brilliantly all evening.
Yamal, on the other hand, was everywhere. He won the penalty, created chances, and caused problems for France at every opportunity. In terms of goals at the tournament, Yamal also had six. In terms of influence on the match, Yamal won clearly.
It was a fascinating contrast. Mbappé is one of the most decorated players in world football. Yamal is just beginning his career. Yet on this night, the teenager was the better player. After the match, France's players left the field with their heads down. Spain celebrated on the pitch in Dallas.

England's Heartbreak — Argentina Win in Stoppage Time
The second semi-final on 15 July was one of the most dramatic matches in recent World Cup history.
Argentina, the defending world champions, faced England in Atlanta in front of nearly 70,000 fans. For England, this was a chance to reach the World Cup final for the first time since 1966 — 60 years ago.
The first half was nervous and tense. There were many fouls and very few clear chances. Neither team was willing to take risks. At half-time, the score was 0-0.
Then, in the 55th minute, England broke the deadlock. Anthony Gordon tapped home a cross from Morgan Rogers to give England a 1-0 lead. The English fans in Atlanta roared. At that moment, England were just 35 minutes away from the final.
But England made a critical mistake. After going ahead, their coach Thomas Tuchel changed the team's approach. England sat back and tried to protect their lead rather than continue attacking. Argentina sensed their opportunity and pressed forward.
With just five minutes of normal time remaining, Lionel Messi delivered a cross into the penalty area. Enzo Fernández met it with a powerful header to make it 1-1. The stadium fell almost silent on the English side.
Then came the moment that will be talked about for years. In the second minute of stoppage time — with extra time seeming certain — Messi collected the ball on the right side and sent a perfectly-weighted cross into the box. Substitute Lautaro MartÃnez rose above his marker and headed the ball into the net. Argentina 2, England 1. The final whistle blew moments later.
England's players sat on the grass in disbelief. Many were in tears. They had been so close. Argentina's players ran to celebrate with their fans. And Lionel Messi — at 39 years old, in what may be his last World Cup — had assisted both goals to send his country to the final.
Â
Messi at 39
Before the tournament began, many people asked whether Lionel Messi was still good enough to compete at the highest level. He is 39 years old — very old for a professional footballer. Yet tournament after tournament, Messi has continued to deliver extraordinary performances.
At this World Cup, Messi has been outstanding. He scored a hat trick in his very first match against Algeria. He has now scored seven goals in the tournament, breaking the all-time World Cup goals record. And against England, he provided two assists in the final minutes to send Argentina to the final.
What is most impressive is not just the goals and assists — it is how he makes the game look simple. When England's defenders were watching Messi in the build-up to the equaliser, they left Enzo Fernández unmarked. When Messi crossed for the winner, his technique was perfect — calm and precise under enormous pressure.
"I think this team plays best when we face a difficult situation," said Argentina's coach Lionel Scaloni after the match. And at the heart of that team, as always, is Messi. The World Cup final will be Spain vs Argentina — and everyone will want to see what the 39-year-old does next.

Spain vs Argentina — The Final Awaits
The 2026 FIFA World Cup final will take place on Sunday, 19 July, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey — just outside New York City. The two teams are Spain and Argentina.

Spain have been the most impressive team in the tournament. They have kept six clean sheets, scored goals through many different players, and used the energy of young Lamine Yamal to great effect. They won the European Championship in 2024 and are now looking to add the World Cup. It would be only their second World Cup title.
Argentina are the defending champions. They won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and are trying to win back-to-back titles — something only Brazil and Italy have done before. Their strength is their togetherness and their ability to win from difficult situations. And, of course, they have Messi.
There is also a very beautiful story behind this final. A famous photograph from 2005 shows a young Messi holding a baby at a Barcelona event. That baby was Lamine Yamal. Now, 21 years later, the two of them will face each other in the World Cup final. Football can sometimes feel like a fairy tale — and this is one of those moments.
