It was a night that Aston Villa fans will never forget. On Wednesday evening in Istanbul, the English club beat Germany's SC Freiburg 3–0 to win the Europa League — their first major trophy in 30 years and their first European title since 1982.
For a long time, the final looked like it could go either way. The first 40 minutes were even, and neither team created many clear chances. Freiburg, who were playing in their very first European final, defended well and stayed calm. But everything changed just before half-time.
In the 41st minute, midfielder Youri Tielemans scored the opening goal with a powerful volley after a short corner. The ball flew into the net with perfect technique. Only a few minutes later, Emiliano Buendía doubled the lead with a beautiful curling shot from the edge of the box, which curved into the top corner. Suddenly, Freiburg found themselves 2–0 down, and they "didn't know what had hit them."
In the second half, Freiburg tried hard to come back into the game, but Villa were too strong and well organised. On 58 minutes, Buendía set up the third goal, crossing the ball for Morgan Rogers, who slid in at the near post to finish a brilliant team move. After that, the result was never in doubt. Freiburg created one good chance, but goalkeeper Emi Martínez made a fine save — although the offside flag had already gone up.

The win was a huge moment for the club and for manager Unai Emery, who has now lifted this trophy five times in his career. Many people call him the "king" of this competition, although he says he is not.
Over the past three and a half years, Emery has slowly transformed Aston Villa into one of the best teams in England. The club has now also qualified for the Champions League next season.
Buendía, with one goal and one assist, was named Player of the Match. Although Freiburg lost, their players and fans could still hold their heads high. The German side had an excellent run to reach the final, and they will play in European competition again next season.
For Aston Villa, however, this was the perfect ending. After 30 years of waiting, the long search for a trophy was finally over.
