Arsenal travelled to Madrid for the first leg of this Champions League semi-final. Arsenal arrived as the only unbeaten team in this season's Champions League, having conceded just five goals in 12 games. Atlético, meanwhile, had scored 34 goals in 14 Champions League games this season, with Julián Álvarez contributing nine of them.
First Half
Arsenal controlled most of the first half, with Atlético giving them too much respect early on. The breakthrough came in a dramatic way just before half-time. Viktor Gyökeres was pushed over in the box by David Hancko, and referee Danny Makkelie pointed to the spot. Gyökeres blasted his penalty past Jan Oblak in the 44th minute to send Arsenal into the break with the lead.

Second Half
Atlético came out strongly after half-time, and the match became more dramatic — and more controversial. Ben White was penalised for handball after another VAR check, with the defender's arm deemed to have been in an unnatural position when struck by Marcos Llorente's shot. From the resulting penalty, Julián Álvarez made no mistake, smashing his effort into the top-left corner in the 56th minute to equalise.
The VAR drama was not finished there. Referee Makkelie pointed to the spot for a third time in the 78th minute when Eberechi Eze went down following a challenge by David Hancko — but he changed his decision after being sent to the monitor, deeming the contact insufficient. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was left fuming at the decision. The match finished 1–1.

The Big Talking Point
The story of this game is VAR and penalties. The referee awarded three penalties during the match — a very unusual number for any game. Two were converted, but Arsenal's second penalty was taken away after a VAR review. Arteta felt strongly that it should have stood. Atlético's coach Diego Simeone, unsurprisingly, disagreed. Simeone said: "In the Champions League semi-finals, this cannot be a penalty, but the referee believed it was. The second one was not a penalty."
Standout Players
Declan Rice was Arsenal's best player — he completed 83 passes, the second-most by an English midfielder in a Champions League semi-final on record. Viktor Gyökeres scored his 19th goal of the season for Arsenal, with only Erling Haaland and Igor Thiago scoring more for a Premier League club across all competitions this season. For Atlético, Julián Álvarez received the highest player rating of any Atlético player, while Koke and Griezmann also impressed.
What Happens Next?
Arsenal have equalled their longest-ever unbeaten run in the Champions League — 13 consecutive games without defeat, matching a run between March 2005 and April 2006. The second leg is at the Emirates Stadium in London on 5 May 2026. Atlético must attack to go through. Arsenal need only a draw.
