Borussia Dortmund 2 - Real Betis 1
Before the Match
Borussia Dortmund were at home at Signal Iduna Park for this important Champions League match. Both teams needed points to improve their position in the league phase standings. Dortmund had shown good form in recent weeks but were missing some key players. Real Betis, from Seville in Spain, were hoping to cause an upset against the German side.
The atmosphere inside the famous stadium was electric. The Yellow Wall — the name for the large terrace of Dortmund fans — was full and very loud from the start.
First Half
The first half was tight and difficult. Dortmund controlled most of the possession and tried to create chances, but Real Betis defended well and were difficult to break down. Neither team scored before half-time, and both sets of fans went into the break knowing the second half would be crucial.
There was an injury worry for Dortmund in the first half when striker Serhou Guirassy went down with a problem and had to leave the pitch. It was a concern for the home side, but Niko Kovač brought on young substitute Konstantinos Karetsas to replace him.
Second Half
Dortmund took the lead just four minutes after the restart. Portuguese striker Fábio Silva scored to make it 1-0. It was a moment that Silva had been waiting for — he had not been playing regularly and wanted to show his coach what he could do. The goal gave Dortmund a lot of confidence.
However, Betis did not give up. In the 67th minute, Aitor Ruibal equalised for the Spanish side with a well-taken goal. The score was 1-1 and the match was wide open again. The Signal Iduna Park crowd urged their team forward.
Just five minutes later, Dortmund found the winner. Substitute Karetsas, who had only been on the pitch for a short time, scored his first ever goal for the club to make it 2-1. It was a special moment for the young player, and the stadium erupted. Dortmund held on for the remaining minutes to secure all three points.

The Stories of the Night
Konstantinos Karetsas was named man of the match. The Greek midfielder had come on as a substitute after Guirassy's injury and had a big impact immediately. After the match, he said he felt 'very happy' and was 'grateful' for the opportunity. He also said that his teammate Fábio Silva deserved the award just as much.
For Fábio Silva, it was also an important night. The young Portuguese forward had been frustrated because he had not been playing much this season. His goal against Betis was a reminder to everyone at the club that he is a quality player.
Dortmund's coach Niko Kovač was pleased with the result and said his team had been 'dictating the game' for most of the match. Despite the scare when Betis equalised, he felt his side had deserved the three points. The result was an important step for Dortmund in the Champions League.
