A Historic Night in London

Harry Kane has won the Ballon d'Or for 2026, becoming the first English player to win the award in 25 years. The ceremony took place at the London Palladium on 26 October — the first time the event has ever been held in the United Kingdom. It was a very special night for English football.

The Ballon d'Or is given every year to the best footballer in the world. It is one of the most famous prizes in sport. This year, Kane beat Spanish teenager Lamine Yamal and French star Kylian Mbappé to take the top prize.

Kane's Incredible Season

Kane had an outstanding season for Bayern Munich and the England national team. In total, he scored 73 goals in 65 games for club and country — a remarkable number. For Bayern Munich alone, he scored 61 goals in 51 matches. In the Bundesliga, Germany's top division, he scored 36 goals in just 31 games.

Kane also performed brilliantly in the UEFA Champions League, scoring 14 goals in the competition. He added six more goals for England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His performances throughout the year made him the clear favourite to win the award.

The Ceremony

The London Palladium was full of football's biggest names. When Kane's name was announced as the winner, the audience cheered loudly. Kane walked onto the stage to collect his trophy. He looked emotional as he held it up.

In his speech, Kane said: 'I gave everything I could.' He thanked his teammates at Bayern Munich and the England squad, as well as his family and his coaches. It was a proud moment for everyone connected to English football.

A Long Wait for England

The last English player to win the Ballon d'Or was Michael Owen, who won it in 2001. Since then, the award has been dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who between them won it many times. Kane joins a very short list of English winners that includes Bobby Charlton and Kevin Keegan.

Kane is 33 years old. He moved from Tottenham Hotspur to Bayern Munich in 2023 and has been scoring goals consistently ever since. Many people said for years that he deserved the award. Now, he finally has it.

Other Awards on the Night

Spanish winger Lamine Yamal, who is only 19 years old, won the Kopa Trophy for the best young player in the world. Alexia Putellas of Spain won the women's Ballon d'Or for the third time in her career. Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simón won the Yashin Trophy, which is given to the best goalkeeper in the world. Spain's national coach, Luis de la Fuente, won the Johan Cruyff Trophy for Coach of the Year.
