Who Is Andoni Iraola?
Andoni Iraola is the new manager of Liverpool Football Club. Liverpool is one of the most famous football clubs in the world. Iraola was officially appointed in the summer of 2026, after the club decided to part ways with their previous manager, Arne Slot.
Liverpool fans are excited about the change. Many people in football think Iraola is one of the best young managers in Europe.
A Short Biography
Andoni Iraola Sagarna was born on 22 June 1982 in Usurbil, a small town in the Basque Country in northern Spain. The Basque Country is a region with its own culture and language. Football is very important there.
As a boy, Iraola played youth football for a local club called Antiguoko. He played alongside two boys who also became very famous in football — Mikel Arteta (now the manager of Arsenal) and Xabi
Alonso (a former Liverpool player and top manager). It was a very talented group!
Iraola then joined the youth academy of Athletic Bilbao, one of Spain's most famous clubs. Athletic Bilbao has a special rule: they only sign players who are from the Basque Country.
Playing Career
Iraola played as a right-back — a defender who plays on the right side of the team. He was known for being strong, hard-working, and a good passer of the ball.
He spent 12 seasons at Athletic Bilbao and played 510 games for the club. That is a huge number! He also played 7 times for the Spanish national team.
In 2015, he moved to New York City FC in the United States to finish his playing career. He retired from playing in 2016.
Becoming a Manager
After retiring, Iraola quickly moved into coaching. He started his managerial career in 2018 with AEK Larnaca in Cyprus. Then he managed Mirandés and Rayo Vallecano in Spain.
At Rayo Vallecano, he did something impressive: he led a club with very little money to promotion to La Liga, Spain's top division. People started to notice his talent.
Bournemouth: The Big Move to England
In June 2023, Iraola was appointed manager of AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League. Many people were surprised — Bournemouth is a small club and the Premier League is very competitive.
But Iraola transformed the team. He introduced an aggressive, high-energy style of football. His players ran a lot, pressed the opponent hard, and scored goals quickly on the counter-attack.
In the 2024–25 season, Bournemouth finished 6th in the Premier League — the best result in the club's history. They also qualified for European football for the first time ever. It was a remarkable achievement.
One of his most famous results was a 2–1 win against Manchester City in November 2024, which ended City's long unbeaten run. The football world took notice.
Liverpool: The Next Chapter
In May 2026, Liverpool sacked Arne Slot after a disappointing season. The club quickly identified Iraola as their first choice to be the new manager.
Liverpool is one of the biggest clubs in the world, with a huge stadium (Anfield), millions of fans, and a rich history. It is a massive step up for Iraola — but many experts believe he is ready.
